Nowadays all engineering branches are linked with computer, without computer it is impossible to imagine modern world. So in this article i describe various software which is widely used in electrical engineering.
Electrical engineering is the branch of generation, transmission and distribution. It include various domain like power system, power electronics, electrical machine design, load flow etc. Of course you have basic knowledge about all above domain so let's start with basic one.
It is very basic software. You can do mathematical calculation by programming in this software by simple syntax. It has simulink facility which has almost all engineering branch's blocks. In electrical engineering you can build inverter, rectifier, Power system distributed generation to analyze waveform and load flow. You can also build basic relays in matlab like differential relay, overcurrent relay by using comparator and converter blocks. I have made one model of AC Voltage controller in Matlab simulink. I have attatched link to download that simulink file.

MATLAB:- MATRIX LABORATORY

PSCAD:- POWER SYSTEM COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
As name suggest, It is used for power system simulation. You need to make single line diagram of power system with circuit breaker, CT, PT and load. It can be done by just drag and drop equipment from toolbar. Load flow, power system protection can be done in this software. PSIM:- POWER ELECTRONICS SOFTWARE
This software is mainly for power electronics simulation. You can do detailed analysis of power electronics equipment like inverter, rectifiers. It also has drag and drop facility to create power electronics circuits. FEMM:- FINITE ELEMENT METHOD MODULES
In machine design, you need to do very much calculation for proper flux density in air gap, if that is not proper than your supply waveform may be get disturbed which can damage your equipment. To know magnetic field, electromagnetic field, electric field at various point this software is used. It is very simple and freely available on internet. Another software like this is ANSYS MAXWELL which is very standard and precise software to analyze electromagnetic field of your machine.
PROTEUS
This software is for electronics circuit like IC circuit, micro controller circuit. You can draw whole circuit by drag and drop elements and by run you can know various branch current and node voltages. It has inbuilt DSO(Digital Storage Oscilloscope) So You can also view waveform of signals. This software has facility for PCB design also.
AUTOCAD
In Substation all equipments are connected with control wires so which contact , wire used at which place we cannot know by just seeing so whole scheme, drawing need to make. This drawing made in AUTOCAD. In substation design you can make whole layout of switchyard. For that you need switchyard equipment library in your AUTOCAD software.
ETAP:- ELECTRICAL TRANSIENT ANALYSIS PROGRAM
This software is used to design power system. Companies are widely use this software as a design tool. This software come with various modules like short circuit, star coordination, arc flash analysis etc. It also has same facility of drag and drop of elements. By simulating power system in this software you can decide rating of circuit breaker, relay settings. RELAY SOFTWARES
Nowadays, Numerical relays are used widely in industries for the protection of various equipments. Numerical relays provide vaste range of function. Apart from protection we can also measure current, voltage and power. When fault occur numerical relay tripped so if we want to know in detail about fault then we can know by extracting DISTURBANCE RECORDER From relay. All relays can connect with laptop, we can control with laptop for that you need to install various sotwares in laptop as below.
